Parking permit types

Colleges, sports arenas and other businesses centered on a year-long business cycle often issue numerical or barcode tags that are good for a year. Branding parking permits with a logo makes these more recognizable, and changing the color every year not only gives your permits a little visibility boost, it can help attendants identify out-of-date permits without any fuss.

If you're using hangtags, don’t forget that the back of the tag is usable space, too! Fill it with disclaimers, images, or reminders.

Although they take a little more preparation and effort, parking permits with QR codes can be useful, too. According to WGN, the City of Chicago recently faced a problem with residents near Wrigley Field flipping their 1D barcoded permits to Cubs fans at a significant (and illegal) profit. QR codes can communicate enough information to specially enabled scanning devices to determine if the permit was bought and sold legally – and make it easier to enforce the law.
For obvious reasons, parking permits work better when they're on the inside of the car, away from the elements (and from people who might want the permit for themselves). The most common varieties of permit either adhere to the inside of the driver's side of the windshield or are hung from the rearview mirror. Both varieties need some kind of company- or location-specific branding to be instantly recognizable, so custom parking decals are the industry standard. The decal or hangtag should include some kind of verifiable identifying information such as a serial number or QR code. (Ideally, to prevent fraud, attendants should be able to check easily whether the car in question is the car that the permit corresponds to in the database.)

Other common features of permits:
Holograms or reflective material to hinder counterfeiting
Differentiation of tiers by color, number or text – so you can charge different rates for better parking spots, separate permits by parking area, or distinguish resident parking from visitor parking
Room for expiration date or a field for license number (to aid verification)
Space for marking assigned parking spots on the permit itself

Permit plans with more than a few permits rarely go into effect without feasibility studies, consultant input, and/or a lengthy communications process – so don't expect changes overnight!
